yellow cdr (yellow tape re-release) on phase!records

Reissue of "The Yellow Tape", an astonishing release by the always challenging French duo Placenta Popeye which came out last year in a ridiculously limited edition of 30 copies. Some of their most intense recordings pushing the feedback poetry real forward along with the sickened throat use and random string abuse. One of our favorite bands in the house. CDR comes w/ a killer bonus long track from the same session! Edition of 70 copies in an amazingly printed fold out A4 poster.

- phase!records // label description -

Missed this the first time round, but thanks to Panagiotis Spoulos of Reverse Mouth, it’s been beautifully resurrected with a massive bonus from the original ‘yellow tape’ sessions seamlessly tacked onto the end. The first two tracks are a real stinking festival of migraine, with everything peaking in the red - Mellow yellow this most definitely isnt.
Screeechin’ candy attacking your ears with toothless mumble and god knows what else collapsing into the blissfully illegible - a power tool carnage for all those that hate the Sunday morning queues at B&Q. Agony to lose yourself in - excellent stuff! The next track is more sculpted, a slow drone with stabbing overdubs of vocal vomit, autistic guitar, and some appetizing brackets of feedback coming at you from ever steepening angles.
The bonus is even better - a 16 + minute buzz-saw lullaby for the lost, with ragged guitar knives coupled with some evil sonics that tear at your head like demented can openers. Don’t miss out this time round, jump over to Phase! and grab yourself a wholesome slice of Placenta.

black fever cdr on carbon records

31+ minutes from this french noise duo. deconstructed songs, similar to the DeadC with their guitar and vocal work sometimes low-key drone/tones, sometimes more aggressive and harsh. its all very good. (at least) 1/2 of the group runs the Tanzprocesz label (http://tanzprocesz.free.fr/). [packaged in Stumptown-Arigato package, sprayed and stenciled, multiple colors, with insert and sprayed and stenciled CDR

- carbon records / label description - ]

That spray painted finish on the outside feels like sandpaper stained in groovy splatter stencilling; inside is packed with the usual Placenta goodness. Six tracks full of fisted guitar rhythms cut up with generous amounts of feedback / effect squawk. With the exception of one track, the vocals are more buried on this particular outing, serving as out of focus rants barbecued by scarred pick-ups. That Dada funk sensibility coming out of the speakers is just fab, re-inventing melody with trash can lids, bass vibro judder and some really tasty Hendrix crayoning, full of zig-zagged angles that get me contorting nicely.

s/t cdr + silkscreened book on le dernier cri

A great dilapidated guitar stagger/stutter with mushed rhythmic crows circling on top to drooling half-formed hobo vexations below. Plagued by invisible demons, arms flailing, spit arched in a ketamined rant economy, legs knocking over the empties mid-sway. The sky is eaten, disfigured in the pole axis of a bottle bottom. Words gulp blurrily around, spill over and darken the soil. If Moondog ever discovered the joys of electricity, I reckon he'd sound a lot like Mr Placenta . What's more, this latest release is housed in a beautiful silkscreen book via those French purveyors of ocular filth Le Dernier Cri - making it the most lavish to date. Loving those brutally drawn orifices squirting moist n hairy globs of snot, faeces and vomit in day-glow pink, green and blood red in true outsider stylee...

s/t on phase!records

French noisestars Placenta Popeye offer 8 tracks of total demolition and breakdown overdose. Using guitars, basses and percussion in the tradition of early Neubauten, demented vox a la Whitehouse and a unique blend of all the above, bathed in fear and desperate madness. Spraypainted, xerox printing on color paper. Limited to 70 w/ numbered obi strips.

Listening to Placenta Popeye (is there a secret contest for silly names going on?) is like going into that time machine and set the timer for 1983. A rock band plays in the parents basement. They use guitars, a bass and something that might be recognized as percussion, but it's not a drumkit, it seems (it's a blurry image, probably super 8 time machine). The singer was recently wounded in a stabbing and sings like he's not fully recovered and he's desperate for being stabbed again. Their younger brother is taping eight songs of their free improv playing rumble on his first sony cassette machine, with that nice blue microphone. The recording, made in French, is buried deep and after an earthquake unearthed by Phaseweb, who burns CDRs out of it. Actually fun to hear. (FdW)

Great looking Placenta Popeye release, with its coloured half-eaten xerox scrawl echoing the chaos of the music inside. The tracks here consist of neat bronchially challenged guitar action that coughs n splutters in broken lines of angular expectorant. The vox follows suit seemingly on the verge of asphyxiation, yelling its message out in a conked out pitch that sounds like the mutant offspring of Beefheart in places. Smashed and gloriously askew, like a wino support band from hell, they force their music into a space too small to contain it, the listener getting covered in the toxic overspill. I've been listening to this on my commute to Oxford, and its sonic charms have been a great in-car deterrent to road rage not to mention the classic looks I get from passers by as I'm stuck in traffic on baking hot days.

placenta popeye + fabstre on tanzprocesz

improv free rock trio // noise rock disto combo - dronerock

Placenta Popeye and Fabstre join forces here and present improvised guitar drones of the less subtle kind. Their main interest on these three tracks lies in creating simple dense repetitive patterns. The highly distorted guitars are strummed in a rhythmic way and far in the background some loose drum playing is going on. There is not a moment of silence to be found here, except towards the end of the first track, when the hectic strumming stops and gives room to slowly unfolding feedback which mixes with a longer sustained, repeated note played on the guitar. Actually the music doesn't succeed in conveying the power, aggression or acoustic intensity that you could expect within the given parameters. The playing remains static, there is not much variation in the tracks and the sound quality is not the best. Yet the diy-character of the music gives it a rawness and directness so that this is a really charming release after all. (MSS)
